nyh esc solidarity corps slovenia escNoored Ühiskonna Heaks (NYH) is promoting calls for participants for European Solidarity Corps (ESC) project which will work with Day Care Centres and Primary Schools from SEPTEMBER 2023 FOR 12 MONTHS in the Škofja Loka area, Slovenia.

September 2023 – August 2024 (12 months).

About the hosting organization:

The long-term ESC volunteering project “Kids in Action 10 – United in Solidarity” will connect 8 organizations or their units in the area of Škofja Loka:

  • Familija (Youth Day Care Center Blok and Project Learning of Young Adults PUM-O),
  • Center for Social Work Škofja Loka (DCΩ and DCM Podlubnik),
  • Center for Social Work Kranj (Day Care Center DC Škrlovec),
  • Three local elementary schools (Jelo Janežič primary school, Cvetko Golar primary school, Škofja Loka – Mesto primary school).

All the partner organizations of the project have a similar work of practice and a similar target population.

About the project:

6 volunteers from different European countries are needed to take part in the volunteering project in Škofja Loka, Slovenia. They will be involved in 8 local organizations active the field of youth, social care, prevention and education. Volunteers will be included in the work of 1-2 organizations as equal members of their teams and as such they will have an opportunity to show and improve their own abilities, develop sense of initiative, gain new skills and get new knowledge through organizing and realizing different activities (workshops, courses, individual support, sports, games, plays, presentations, lectures).

Vacancy 1: MDC Blok & PUM-O

MDC BLOK (working hours 13:00-19:00) is a daily youth center which is a part of the Familija foundation. The daily center offers diverse programs for youngsters between 10 and 18 years of age.

The daily youth center is aimed at providing equal opportunities for underprivileged children through facilitating activities. BLOK plays a significant role for the youngsters as it functions as a “second home” for them. Here the youngsters have the possibility to develop themselves through these non-formal (educational) activities. They typically develop interests in new areas, improve their social and soft skills and increase their self-esteem.

PUM-O (working hours 8:30 – 14:30) stands for “Project learning for young adults”. It is an informal educational program that serves youngsters between the ages of 15 and 25 years who dropped out of the educational system. The main goal of the program is to motivate the young people to either continue education or pursue and obtain employment. The program enables the participants to gain different competences and skills through many informal forms of learning.

Vacancy 2: DC Škrlovec

The program is realized by two full-time workers and around 20 volunteers, who are involved in the activities based in their own desires, wishes, knowledge and needs. Škrlovec wants to include kids who face difficulties in the growing up process and who are deprived of normal family life.

Vacancy 3: Primary Schools

The volunteers will work mostly between 8:00 and 13:00, from time to time also in the afternoon in case of afterschool or extracurricular activities.

OŠ Škofja Loka – Mesto and OŠ Cvetka Golarja are two primary schools for children aged 6 to 15 situated in the town of Škofja Loka. The daily activities of the volunteer will be discussed with the coordinating teacher and will be mostly based on his/her interests and preferences.

Vacancy 4 and 5: DC Om and MDC Podlubnik

DC Om and MDC Podlubnik (working hours 13:00 – 19:00) are run by the Center for Social Work Škofja Loka. The program is primarily intended for children and adolescents from Škofja Loka between the ages of 6 and 18, and their parents, who are deprived of a normal family life experience due to diverse life challenges. The purpose is to help break down barriers and pave the way to better educational, emotional, physical, and social well-being in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Vacancy 6: Jelo Janežič school for kids with special needs

The school educates youngsters with specific learning difficulties and its main focus is to help pupils with intellectual disabilities get as independent as they possibly can. The chosen volunteer will assist with daily activities, help with the program and will also have an opportunity to organize different workshops based on their interests and the children’s needs.

Participant profile:

The future volunteer should bring in their own ideas into the project and be prepared to create, plan and execute their own projects. Candidates should be between 18 and 30 years old and show self-initiative, motivation, patience, flexibility, open-mindness, creativity, good communication skills, interest in working with children, youth (and adolescents) and they should be able to speak English.

Abilities in music, sport, manual activities, handcrafts, dance, art and multimedia would be convenient. Past experience in education and youth work is welcomed.

Accomodation, food and transport arrangements:

The volunteers will be accommodated in the flat located on the main square of Škofja Loka. Each volunteer will stay in single bedroom with shared cooking, washing, laundry and social facilities. Volunteers will cook by themselves, monthly food allowance will be provided (196 €). They will be also entitled to receive a monthly allowance of 150 €. To each of the volunteers, the bike will be provided and tickets for public transportation (if needed).

Supervision:

Volunteers will be provided with mentors, who will personally support and include them in the local environment, social life, local customs and lifestyle, and coordinators, who will integrate the volunteer into the work processes and inform him/her about the work of the organization and the people involved in the work. Supervision over the work of mentors and work coordinators will be carried out by the project coordinator, who will, in the course of the entire project, be in direct contact with everyone involved.
