Despite the fact that the project lasted only 2 weeks, feels like we have spent months there. Altamura is a lovely town in the south of Italy; sunny weather and friendly people, that is how I would describe the surrounding. The town was quite small, I think in our case it was an advantage since we could walk wherever we want. Our accommodations were located in the heart of the town, the most authentic place that you can find in Altamura. We were sharing flat between 4 of us : me, my Estonian buddy Katariina and 2 Latvian participants. Second flat was shared between Spanish and French participants. Living with someone who came from another country with absolutely different background was interesting and fun. Sometimes we cooked something together or went out to try something local, that made us closer.

Our main goal was to provide our help in Agorateca; it is a local library, that has it is own garden! That was exciting! We have planted tomatoes, peppers, basil and some more plants with a complicated Italian name 🙂 Hosted organization have teached us how to plant and how to help the plants not to dry out in such hot weather. Then we also refine garden beds; took out the hogweed and planted a new beautiful grass. I really liked to see the progress that we made since the place became more clean and attractive. Also in Agorateca we have made a common place for people to spend time outside. We have done new benches and stage. Working with wood was fascinating since it is something that you don’t do in your daily life. I suppose it was also a great opportunity to make us closer since we had a lot of teamwork and moments when we needed to help each other. esc volunteer italy itaalia anna katariina vabatahtlik eesti hope

Days that I will remember for a long time were farm days. For couple of days we were going to the local farm to render our help there. It was a family farm and an unusual thing for Italy that differ this farm from any other is that it is runned by a woman, called Marie-Antoinette. There we had plenty of work, but plenty of fun at the same times. We were feeding cows, equiping cagies of chicken, cleaning pounds of sheeps. Also some work concerning farm buildings such us painting walls and oiling benches. I would not say that it was easy all the time, but the atmosphere was so friendly and chill so it was a pleasure to make this farm a better place. After all, Marie-Antoinette’s father showed us how to make mozzarella and how the size of mozzarella affect its taste. That was breathtaking!

During most of the evenings we were gathering together to spend time and talk. Part of Italian team were long term volunteers that have been working in Agorateca for months. It was nice to hear stories about their experience. We spent really great time together. We had cute pizza parties, camping near the lake and we were watching football competition all together! It was a period of EURO 2020 and we were watching all matches where Italian team was playing. Seeing how people are happy when their national team is winning, even a simple match, melted my heart. I considered it as a great chance to see culture from inside.

All in all, I want to say that ESC volunteering is one of the best experience that you can have in your life. It is broaden your mind and in some point your way of thinking. I really recommend everyone to go and try it out, you can choose short term or long term volunteering, topic and activities that interest you. Everyone can find an activity to enjoy!

Need kaks nädalat Itaalias olid imelised. Esimeset päevast alates olin lummatud. Olen varem Itaaliat korra külastanud ja nüüd ei mõista, miks ei ole ma seda varem rohkem teinud, sest need inimesed, söök, arhitektuur, atmosfäär on lihtsalt hingematvad. Sihtpunkti reisides ja ka tagasi tulles jõudsime läbi käia päris suure osa Itaaliast, suures osas küll transpordivahendis olles, kuid siiski saime arvatavasti üsna laialdase ülevaate riigist. Meie, minu ja Anna, projekt toimus linnakeses nimega Altamura.

Meil oli väga põnev seltskond – itaallased, prantslased, hispaanlased, lätlased ja eestlased. Kummalisel kombel pandi Baltimaade noored ühte korterisse ja prantslased ja hispaanlased teisse. Tegelikult pole see ilmselt teab, mis kummaline, meile väga mugav, sest me oleme ilmselt üsna sarnase elutempoga, kuid siiski pani see otsus esialgu naerma, aga ega ma ei kurda. Meie korterikaaslased olid väga toredad ja loodan neid varsti külastada. Lisaks meie projekti vabatahlikele olid meie seltskonnas ka pikaajalised vabatahtlikud, kes aitasid meid meie tööülesannetega ja kõige põhilisemalt tutvustasid nad meile Itaaliat ja Altamurat nagu kohalikud olles ise juba tükk-aega seal elanud ja keele suhu saanud. Kõige eksootilisem neist oli vast tüdruk Tuneesiast, kelle kultuuriline taust on ehk kõige erinevam võrreldes siis Euroopa riikidega. Tõtt-öelda olen alati pidanud eri riikidest pärit inimesi äärmiselt erinevateks just meie tausta poolest, aga pärast seda kahte nädalat tahan öelda, et ei ole üldse tähtis, kust me pärit oleme, sest inimesed oleme ikka ühesugused ja kõik sarnasused kaaluvad suurelt erinevused üle. Lihtsalt vapustav seltskond.

Põhiliselt veetsime oma aega Agoratecas, mis on meid vastuvõtnud organisatsiooni hõlmatav raamatukogu, mis teeb koostööd kõrval asuva kooliga. Kooli õpilased saavad vahetunni ajal aega veeta aias, kus toimetavad organisatsiooni töötajad ja vabatahtlikud. Aias on suur köögiviljaaed, väike taimla, istumisnurk, kompostikast ja terrass. Meie ülesanneteks oli hooldada köögiviljaaeda, taimlat ja ehitada erinevaid istumisaluseid terrassile. Väga põnev oli oma kätega midagi ära teha, olgu see siis rohimine, istutamine või saagimine, mis muidugi oli ka selle konkreetse projekti eripära (HOPE-Hands on project for Europe), et tulemuse saamiseks on tarvis tööle käed külge panna. Palju tegelesime ka üksteise kultuuride tundma õppimisega. Pakkus palju lõbu tutvustada eesti keelt romaani keeli kõnelevatele inimestele. Ja ehk kõige vahvam oli õppida rohkem naaberriigi kohta.

Oma kümnest tööpäevast veetsime kolm linnast väljas taludes. Taludes töötamine on täiesti omaette kogemus,sest olla ja toimetada loomade läheduses on niivõrd lõõgastav ja meelt parandav. Kõige ägedam kogemus seal oli näha,kuidas valmistatakse mozzarellat. Ilmselt üks tähtsamaid asju Itaalias on toit ja sellekordse kahe nädala jooksul oli mul ja tegelikult rohkemgi Annal eesmärk lähemalt tutvuda Itaalia juustumaailmaga ja just see mozzarella tegemise kogemus oli ja on vaieldamatu tipphetk kogu selle missiooni juures.

Päevade esimesed pooled veetsime tööpostil, aga teinekord päev alles algas pärast nelja kui tööülesanded said täidetud ja algas õhtune vöönd. Palju veetsime aega linna keskplatsil aega veetes ja melu nautides. Teinekord käisime jäätist või jääjogurtit söömas või käimas oleva EMi mänge vaatamas või kambakesi pitsat söömas. Nii et igav ei hakanud meil kordagi!
