EVS in Villacidro – Birgit Katai – 8 Months Volunteering in Sardinia – Italy
Name of the project: EVS in Villacidro
Date: 01.02.2019 – 15.09.2019
City/Country: Villacidro, Sardinia
My EVS project took place in Villacidro, Sardinia. It is a little town in the mountains with a population of about 14 000 people. The main project was volunteering in an educational center for kids. The children were aged 4-12 and super enthusiastic about our presence. I and another volunteer from Greece would play, go to field trips and do all kinds of arts and crafts with the kids. I definitely learned the Italian language much better when playing with kids because they formed very simple sentences and repeated a lot of the words.
Our other project was in the local youth center to help create a new touristic image of the town. We designed a brochure with the most important tourist attractions and a web page with information about the city and its history. During this project, I definitely advanced my skills in graphic design.
It turned out to be one of the best experiences I have had in my life. I made many close friends and got to know a bunch of interesting people. My sending organization was awesome in preparing me and the receiving organization was super helpful and resourceful. We were assigned a mentor in our town who would help us integrate better into the community. He was an absolute saint and one of my best friends there. For me, the best learning moments were when we would go on road trips with the friends we found in the local community. Traveling around Sardinia and mainland Italy while making even more friends with other volunteers and locals. 10/10 would recommend to anyone!
