Name of the project: Together on the Refugees Highway
Date: 18th to 25th November 2018
Country/City: Greece, Thessaloniki
What was the main topic of the event?
Erik Toomet – Migrants and refugees, how to integrate them to a local society. Raising awareness of refugee problems
Laura Kiili – Migration
What was the biggest learning moments on the event for you?
Erik Toomet – Realising how hard the life of a refugee can be. I have to start raising awareness in young people about the topic of refugees.
Laura Kiili – I think my biggest learning moment was hearing about others experiences. To hear what people have been through and how far they’ve come in order to find what they are looking for, whether it’s safety, better opportunities or something else. Trying to wrap my mind around that and imagining what it would be like for me is something that touched me and taught me the most.
Do you have any plans to continue active in the field? If yes, what?
Erik Toomet – In any way possible. As a youth worker I can play games with the youth to raise awareness of the problem. Also as a student I will carry on the message and what I have learned to other youth workers in my uni.
Laura Kiili – I think for me it is my point of view and my ideas that count. That is what I plan on sharing with people who want to discuss this topic. Through sharing and and possibly changing someone’s narrow point of view I can be active in this field.
Would you recommend it to your friends? I yes, why? If not, why not?
Erik Toomet – Yes! This was the most I’ve ever learned in a week. I made such good connections everywhere around Europe. I know so much more about the refugee crisis and how we should think about refugees.
Laura Kiili – Yes, of course. It is always mind-opening to learn about topics this important and world-wide.
